Unit overview:
In this unit the children will find Cinderella’s shoe left in the classroom (hook). They will become familiar with the features of Traditional Stories, naming different Traditional Stories, and making comparisons between them. The children will think about the characters thoughts and feelings and prepare questions to ask them during a hot seating activity. There is built in opportunity to clarify new vocabulary within a text and exploring this deeper. They will be able to sequence the story chronologically using picture cards and story boards. They will complete a short-written text in the form of an invitation to the ball.  Grammar lessons include looking at the way expanded noun phrases have been used within the text, the use of regular and irregular past tense, the possessive apostrophe, and the use of exclamation marks to add increasing detail and expression to stories. The children will then plan and write their own Traditional Tale, selecting the setting, good and evil characters. They will plan out their story first using a story mountain and then write their own Traditional Tale using all the features that they have explored throughout the unit.
