Unit overview:
In this unit the children will explore the different animals from an African plain. They will make a prediction on what might happen in the story ‘The Ugly Five’ by Julia Donaldson. The children will then make simple inferences based on what has been suggested by the characters in the story. The children will the make a simple story map that will sequence the main points and order of the story.
The children will then begin to write compound sentences using the conjunction ‘and’. They will be taught how to use adjectives to describe nouns. They will look at an example of a non-chronological report for an ‘African Buffalo’ and highlight the main features. The children will describe one of the animals from the African Safari. This will support them when they are asked to write a short factual report about one of the safari animals mentioned in ‘The ugly five’ story. The report will include information about the animal’s appearance, what they eat, how it moves and what noise they make.
