Unit Overview:

In this unit, children will be greeted with a special ‘class owl’ and be introduced to the book ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ by Jill Tomlinson. Children will explore different ‘synonyms’ for the word ‘Afraid’. Through Shared Reading lessons, children will begin to ask and answer questions for the main character ‘Plop’. As the children continue to read the story, they will make predictions based upon what they have already read. The class will then be taught how to develop their own viewpoints about being afraid of the dark. Children will then take part in role play activities to retell the story of ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’, taking freeze frames at different stages of the story. Expanded noun phrases will then be explored within the text to describe characters. The class will then be taught to use their own expanded noun phrases to describe other woodland animals. Statements, command, questions and exclamations will be identified within the text and children will be taught the main features of these types of sentences. The main writing outcome of this lesson is to plan and write their own story about a different woodland animal with a different fear.
