In this unit, the children will slowly reveal an image of a snail and a whale and be introduced to the text by Julia Donaldson. The children will draw upon their background knowledge of snails and whales. They will also identify and discuss new vocabulary. As the children become familiar with the story, they will take a closer look at the way grammar is used within the book. They will identify nouns and turn them into plural nouns. The children will then begin to ask a few questions that they would like to research further about whales. They will then do a small amount of research on whales and consider the reasons why whales are so important for the environment. Using this information, they will verbally construct sentences to explain why whales are essential for our eco system. The children will then plan and write a short presentation to present to the class – persuading people why it is important to save whales, keeping the sea and ocean protected.
