Based around the Nonsense Poem 'On The Ning Nang Nong' by Spike Milligan, this 8 lesson English Unit of Work covers KS1 National Curriculum Objectives for S & L, Reading, Grammar and Spelling and Composition. Unit overview:
In this performance poetry unit, the children will identify the features of the nonsense poem ‘On the Ning Nang Nong' by Spike Milligan. They will enjoy listening to the poem and identify onomatopoeia, recurring language, rhyming words and alliteration. Children will then be taught to plan and write their own nonsense poem using the same features as ‘The Ning Nang Nong’. The children will learn to recite 'On The The Ning Nang Nong' by heart and select instruments and choose actions that they think matches the words in the poem. The children will then perform their poem to a Year 1 class.
Reading Objectives:
- Discuss favourite words and phrases in poems.Recognising and joining in with predictable phrases.
- Learning to appreciate rhymes and poems, and to recite some by heart.
- Recognising simple recurring literary language in poetry.
Speaking and Listening Objectives:
- Gain, maintain and monitor the interest of the listener(s).
Grammar Objectives:
- Exploring onomatopoeia
- Exploring rhyming words
- Exploring alliteration
Writing Objectives:
- Planning or saying out loud what they are going to write about.
- Writing down ideas and/or key words, including new vocabulary.
- Read aloud what they have written with appropriate intonation to make the meaning clear.
