Unit Overview:
The children will discover a parcel under a Christmas tree that contains the story ‘Christmasaurus’ by Tom Fletcher. During shared reading lessons, the children will identify unfamiliar vocabulary and complete word webs to gain a deeper understanding of key vocabulary. The class will be taught how to make inferences about stories by using the information already provided in the text and images. Children will the retell the story in their own words, using a storyboard to support them with this process. The class will then take part in a hot-seating activity where they construct questions to ask the characters from the story. This will support them to develop empathy and understanding of the characters feelings. Grammar objectives are linked to the text, looking at how regular and irregular past tense verbs are used. They will also use the subordinating conjunction ‘because’ to explain ‘why’ they wish for their own superpower. The text will be unpicked to locate and find contractions being used within the Christmasaurus story. During shared writing lessons, children will be exposed with the features needed to write a letter. They will plan and write their very own letter to Santa asking for their own ‘wish’ or ‘dream’ to come true.
